Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students volunteer at beach clean-ups, some are members of the Environmental club that meets on a weekly basis. Last Saturday we took 25 students to Cabrillo Beach to volunteer for the California Coastal clean-up day. They care about our environment because their local city is very industrial.

I have 150 inner city High School students in my AP Environmental Science class.

The school is in Southern California and 95% of our students qualify for free lunches. The city the school is located in is predominately a Latino, working class neighborhood.

My Project

Students learn how to measure the concentration of air pollutants generated through everyday activities and compare their results to the EPA's National Ambient Air Quality Standards. The city the high school is located in has many factories and few parks. All around the school are commercial factories and casinos. If students and their families are informed about pollutants in the air, they will feel empowered to take better care of the environment. The lab activities will require students to calculate the mass of air pollutants added to the atmosphere by each point source and to identify which produces the most air pollution. In addition, they learn how the Pollutant Standards Index and Air Quality Index are calculated and how they relate to human health. Students will learn how to estimate air pollution generated by everyday activities that occur in their very own neighborhood.

It is important for these students to have hands on activities and also be aware of pollutants around their school.

These 16-17 years old students will soon be electing officials in a one or two years. They will become constituents and vote on laws that make differences in all our lives. Many are not aware that life is not just about the money they make, the labels they wear, or what they own. Education about the environment is vital to conserving our planet.
