My Students

Pizza! Veggie ka-bobs! Cookies! You can eat well without using electricity or gas to prepare your food. This project will teach students how to harness the power of the sun to make a delicious, environmentally conscious meal.

My students love science, and are always more engaged and excited when they have an opportunity to practice the skills we study.

Most of my students have limited exposure to environmentally conscious activities like conservation and recycling. The students are in sixth and seventh grade in a rural school. We have a perfect spot to harness the sun for this activity.

My Project

There are so many skills that go into preparing and eating a meal! The main focus of the unit is ecology, but the students will practice math skills (measuring), social skills, following directions, table manners, and more. Throughout the ecology unit, students will explore various ways of using less electricity and gas and more renewable resources. The solar ovens can be used multiple times to prepare a variety of foods. Eventually, I plan to have the children grow their own vegetables for use in the ovens. My hope is to show the students how easy it can be to make changes in human behavior that will positively impact our environment.

There are no funds available from my district to purchase solar ovens.

My students are far more likely to engage in environmentally conscious behaviors if they have an opportunity to practice those behaviors, instead of reading about them or watching a video.
