My Students

A picture is worth 1000 words. Imagine the impact that we can have on our children to take care of the Earth if we give them the power to speak with pictures.

I teach science to all grades, K-5, at our small elementary school.

The students come to the science lab once a week for 1 hour or more each visit. Our school has a wide range of students in its population. We serve neighborhood children, a large community of military families, and students from areas of higher poverty that ride the bus to our school by choice. We have a large percentage of free lunch students and many English language learners. While our elementary classrooms focus on all academic areas, my science lab is dedicated to the enrichment and enjoyment of science.

My Project

Our school is working to take some ecological steps to leave less of a carbon footprint. We have begun a recycling program, and we have had several lessons on ways we can conserve. We have also started a small school garden to help teaching and to build a sense of community. We need the science lab to have some digital cameras to track our progress visually. We are hoping to use the cameras to create images for both PowerPoint presentations and the Internet that will have a significant visual impact; to persuade other students and adults to make environmentally friendly decisions. The students have a clear enthusiasm to work become spokespeople, but our program needs a little help getting started. We need several digital cameras so that students can work in groups to gather images.

This project has the potential to empower our students to take a stand and fight for something that is important to them: the Earth.

While these children are still young, we can introduce them to the idea that the Earth needs to be cared for and nurtured. With this project, we hope to juxtapose positive images with negative images of humanities impact on the environment and, hopefully, persuade families to make some effort toward erasing our carbon footprint.
