Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are hard-working and amazing. They come to school excited to work on our current science inquiry problem. They speak a variety of different languages and come from homes where there is often not enough money for food, let alone extras. Our school does not have the money to fund the professional development I need to continue to provide engaging, exciting, NGSS aligned lessons for my students.

My students are motivated by phenomena driven, inquiry-based science lessons.

They beg to do "real" science and they love discussing and solving real-world problems. We spend our class time investigating, discussing, finding evidence, analyzing our findings, and attempting to solve our big questions. Many students say science class is the highlight of their day.

My Project

The NGSS are the newest and most exciting science standards. They focus on phenomena, inquiry, and sense-making. My students are highly motivated by the types of lessons that adhere to the NGSS produces. We've been lucky in that I have been accepted into several different NGSS focused professional development over the last few years.

Unfortunately, despite my best efforts, I have yet to go to an NGSS professional development that focuses on the California Environmental Principals and Concepts.

The EP&Cs are a phenomena based way for students to learn about and identify actions that can be taken to positively impact the local environment.

In this professional development I will be learning ways to help students understand local environmental phenomena and through discussion and analysis, come up with inventive design solutions that will positively impact our environment. This professional development supports all 3 dimensions of the NGSS, as well as CA standards for English Language Arts, English Language Development, and Math.
