My Students

We are the environmentalists of Payneville. We will not help build the school to prison pipeline but we are groundbreaking in building the science to college pipeline.

My school is categorized as one of the lower performing schools in the county and in need of extra support and assistance for our students, who all experience high levels of poverty, violence and educational inequity.

The majority of my students will either be the first or in the first generation of their families to attend college. Statistically, only 27% of them will graduate college within four years (compared to 42% of students whose parents graduated from college). But not the Payneville Environmentalists, we all aspire to go to college.

My Project

Aside from a ten student AP Environmental class, all of my students are all classified as low readers! This is also the first time Environmental Science or APES has been offered at our school in over 10 years. The lab supplies will allow my students to go out into our local school environment and investigate over-population, acid rain, waste-water management, and air pollution through hands-on, visual activities that aid their understanding of the topics.

It is important to make our students aware of their environment and the scientific measures that can be taken to protect and conserve our planet's resources.

Human consumption places stress on the natural processes that renew some resources and depletes those resources that cannot be renewed.

I am also requesting post-it pads because they are an item I use everyday in my classroom. When my class gathers together for a lesson, the easel is used so that I can create an anchor chart based on the lesson. These anchor charts are displayed throughout the room so that my students can refer back to them when needed. This is an essential item in my classroom. In my classroom, commonly known as Paynville, we also have a class economy. Each student has a job to perform daily and will receive play money biweekly to spend on rent, fines, and at auctions. The folders, colored paper, glue sticks, scissors, white out and glue will be used to make money, envelopes for students to hold onto their earnings, logs for fines and posters to explain our project purpose.
