Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There are students up and out of their seats, huddled on the floor or in corners. There is noise throughout the classroom, students are encouraged to talk and collaborate. At any given point in the day I have students up and on the go, plus I need can't sit still for long either.
In my class we love to get our hands dirty, to the point that my room sometimes looks like a craft store blew up (just ask the custodians about the paper mache project right before the end of school).
Who knew that could get everywhere even after paper was put down to prevent the disaster that ensued). We love art using glue and scissors any chance we get (being able to use glitter is just a bonus).
What I want students to walk away from my class every year with is the love, compassion, and understanding for this environment in which they live, feeling it is okay to ask why and to find out, and no matter what they must always try. My kids a special each and every one and I am so grateful for having the opportunity of being their teacher.
My Project
Everyday my students have an opportunity to read independently to foster reading skills. They read to themselves, to a partner, and even voice record their reading for play back later to hear their fluency and how much they comprehend the story. Allow students to read anything that fascinates them even if it is above their reading level, because no student should ever hear you can’t read that. For all the activities I do in the classroom to encourage reading I have found that having them sit in a chair while reading a book is not only uncomfortable. If students are uncomfortable it makes reading less enjoyable which means it is less likely students will want to read. To increase the joy of reading I allow them to pick a seat anywhere in the classroom and they love it. They are under tables, in corners, or even under their uncomfortable desk. This strategy would work a lot better if they had other options than just sitting on the hard floor. Let’s face it as adults we often don’t sit in a desk to read, why should be treat our budding readers any different? Please help me create an atmosphere of passionate readers.
