This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are brilliant. I am constantly taken aback by their awareness and depth of analysis. They're compassionate, ambitious, and sociable. My students are highly diverse, and they are proud to bring their unique cultures and experiences to the classroom, applying them to the curriculum, and using them as the foundations of their personal goals. My school is filled with dedicated students, teachers, and staff who have worked hard to overcome the devastation of Hurricane Harvey in our community, but we could still use some help covering costs of basic needs for some of our students.

My Project

In the chaos of the last government shutdown, my school had a wakeup call. Many of our students -- over 90% of whom qualify for free or reduced lunch -- had their food assistance threatened. Had the shutdown continued, our students and their families would have been faced with even more unfair decisions about what bills to pay and how much food they could afford to eat. Though the shutdown has ended, the scare pushed us to begin a food pantry to help our students and families who could benefit from extra assistance and those who do not qualify for government assistance because of documentation status.

I am asking my friends and family to consider funding this project to help stock our new food pantry.

The project seeks to provide some food staples and basic hygiene products, so our school can serve its students' bodies as well as minds.
