This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
We are working with the "Kiss the Ground" initiative to better understand climate change and how we can make a difference. "Kiss the Ground" focuses on plants and a better way to grow our food. We would like to showcase how plants grow and how easy it is to grow food, even if all you have is a windowsill. The Aerogardens allow us to start plants from seed and, see how they develop. Seedlings are transplanted into small pots and put under the grow lights. Students can see how the plants develop in their next stage of growth. When the plants are mature they will be put into the larger pots and taken to our Culinary department. Culinary will be able to use the herbs and peppers as they prepare food; sort of a classroom to table experience. I have used a similar student enrichment project at another school and it worked out really well. Students were really excited about growing plant. Some started windowsill gardens while some started gardens in their yard. I received photos from parents of their student's garden and how happy both the parents and the students were with the project and it's results. I expect similar if not better results this time too.
Having the opportunity to learn how to grow food will give my students a life skill.
Gardening can feed both the body and the soul. It provides an outlet that's good for the planet and good for the person.
This enrichment opportunity will accelerate student learning and provide skills that they can use during their lifetime and possibly even pass on to their children. This enrichment opportunity can be life changing and planet saving.
