Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As students move up grades, “play time” like dramatic play, water tables, sand tables, and outdoor play decrease as academic content takes reign. Social skills like turn taking, patience, following directions (just to name a few) are fostered in the early years through center time. With that designated time moving down the list of priorities in upper grades, these social skills don’t get enough practice and it could lead to decrease in attention, unhealthy friendships, and disinterest in tasks and goals. Content in literacy and math takes over and workbooks, handouts and videos are designed and assigned to help students further develop skills like reading, writing, counting and computing.

Our school admin understands the importance of play and enrichment and allocates times during the school year for grades to participate in enrichment programs that are engaging yet allow for teachers to develop a new skill in a creative way.

That is why I am asking for board games and few card games for my enrichment program group of students to use where they can learn to play collaboratively, play junior version of classic board games like Monopoly and LIFE, play some literacy games like scrabble and bananagrams and games like “Spot-it!” that can be used with non-verbal students, if needed. The board games allow students to develop counting skills as they have to use a die and move the correct number of spaces. The students in the enrichment program are a mix of students from the same grade but different classes so it’s interesting to see how personalities mesh and learn to get along while having fun!
