My Students

A day in the life of a first grader at our school includes silliness, curious questions, writing stories, practicing using our manners, brilliant ideas, dance parties, listening to our favorite authors, and hard work. They enjoy spending time outside, learning through play, and fostering friendships that will carry them through their educational career at our K-8 school. Hands-on learning and integrating technology into their skill building and projects excites them as learners.

Our energetic group of students enjoys learning using a hands-on approach.

They are movers and shakers and enjoy a variety of work areas, tools, dividers, seating choices, and movable work surfaces. These tools help increase their focus, provides them with movement as they work and helps them feel accomplished and successful.

My Project

Our first grade students need leveled sets of environmental science books for guided reading groups. Our first grade has a group of students that are reading at an end of first grade level or beyond! We want to provide enriching books to these students to read during guided reading groups that focus on the world around them. In first grade, we think it is important for students to learn about nature and our environment. Each spring, we work with our agricultural teacher to plant seeds, get our school garden ready for planting, pick up trash around our school campus and talk about composting.

We feel it is VERY important for students at every grade level to start thinking about their planet, the animals that live on it, how we need to care for it and how we can improve it!

By providing students with not only opportunities to spend time out in nature, getting their hands dirty and learning through touch, we also feel that it is important to back up that learning with texts that teach about our environment. Some of the texts that I am requesting are about habitats that are very different from the habitats here in Maine. Students will be able to compare and contrast the habitats of animals in Maine to those in other areas. We are looking forward to fueling the curiosity of our students with these rich sets of guided reading books.
