My Students

Our California high school serves a very diverse school population. But our novels are mostly from a white male perspective. Each year we teach a "Why War?" unit and I'd like to introduce stories from other perspectives (females, African American, Asian, Latino), so my students can better relate.

Our high school students are very diverse, unique and creative!

They love to be challenged through project based learning, and they can't get enough technology in their lives. Our population is predominantly Latino, Asian and African American, and many are currently learning English as a second language.

My Project

As part of our "Why War?" teaching unit, we connect our students learning across all subject areas. As an English teacher, I try to expose my students to different perspectives on war through novels, articles, short stories, research and film. I have chosen three novels that show a more diverse perspective on America's wars in the 20th century. 'Farewell to Manzanar' tells the story of Los Angeles' own Japanese Americans in WWII Internment camps. 'Fallen Angels' is about a young African American man from Harlem serving in the Vietnam war. 'Flygirl' explores the world of the first female American military pilots, the WASPs during WWII, through the eyes of a biracial girl, breaking down racial and gender stereotypes while fulfilling her dreams.

Not only will you be helping fill the shelves of our classroom library, but you will be giving our students a host of new voices to learn from, ones closer to their own cultural experiences.
