Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I have an energetic, inquisitive, and enthusiastic group of 26 seven and eight-year-olds in the inner city of Providence, Rhode Island. My second graders are always eager to come to school and love to read, write and problem solve in such thoughtful and creative ways! My students are so appreciative of each other and all that we do every day. They are culturally diverse and enjoy sharing their own unique experiences with the class.
Many of my students have special needs and also special talents so we learn so much from each other.
My school is working hard to build community among families and staff, and we have a safe, respectful environment.
My Project
One of my favorite quotes is, "There are many ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is best of all." It is from Jacqueline Kennedy and it's so meaningful to me because books were my best friends growing up.
I would read my same favorite books over and over and it was like visiting different people, places, and times in history I would otherwise not have the chance to visit.
I would really love and appreciate being able to provide this same opportunity for my truly special students. Each book requested on this project was carefully thought about and chosen because it either encouraged healthy social emotional growth, such as the book, "A Little SPOT of Anxiety: A Story About Calming Your Worries," by Diane Alber, celebrated cultural diversity, such as "Bippity Bop Barbershop," by Natasha Anastasia Tarpley, or is from a high interest character chapter book series such as "Fancy Nancy," by Jane O'Connor.
My students love to read, read, read! They read during 'IDR' which is Independent Daily Reading time, we share books together as a whole group, and it would be great to add the emotion themed books to our calm corner, where children go to have time and space to themselves to self-regulate and focus on their feelings.
It would mean so much to all of us to be able to add these new books to our classroom library for all of the children to share now and for all my future students to have access to. Thank you so much for taking the time to read our project. It means so much that people care and any amount at all is greatly appreciated.
