Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an ESL teacher which serves a diverse student population in Chicago. Throughout the year, my ESL class, which consists of freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, plans to read non-fiction news stories and books.

My ESL students have expressed a willingness and desire to incorporate technology into our classroom. For example, when participating in a class discussion, many students will reference a video clip found on the Internet that supplements their argument. In addition, a number of websites now exist that contain in-class exercises for ESL students; activities from web searches to grammar exercises could begin in the class and finish on a computer at home, thus extending the learning environment from the school to the community. Such learning is essential for all students, especially those who are mastering a new language.

The goal of any ESL classroom is to provide each student with a variety of materials with which to increase fluency, listening, speaking, and writing skills. Our classroom is in need of a DLP projector so that my lessons may utilize the myriad learning opportunities that the Internet offers. By linking the projector to a laptop, I would be able to enhance the learning environment by providing my students with multimedia and visual support for their burgeoning English skills.

I know that this technology will greatly enhance the learning opportunities that exist in my classroom. My hope is that my School becomes a magnet for ESL students in Chicago; we are proud to be one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the city, and our high school has an obligation to provide a superior education to our community. With your help, my classroom will be prepared to provide such an education by integrating technological benefits that will engage and motivate my students to succeed.
