This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Creating activities on a Promethean board takes a long time. I create many lessons for the board, but I lack the time to create the "fun" activities the students I wish I would make. I am in need of fun and engaging reading activities for the Promethean board to build my student's reading skills.

I teach reading and language arts to fifty three fifth graders on a daily basis.

Without a doubt, this is the most motivated group of students I have ever taught. They are very engaged in the learning process and are very vocal about what they need to succeed. They have a great way of getting me to reflect on how I teach and how to become a more effective teacher. My students and I are from a Title 1 school that houses our district's English as a Second Language program. Majority of my students speak another language at home, which include, Spanish, French, Tagalog, and Arabic.

My Project

I am requesting eight CD-ROM games that are compatible with my Promethean board. I purchased a CD-ROM from Lakeshore and my students LOVE it! Not only that, they remember what they learned about synonyms, antonyms, figures of speech, and more. They can give me the specific examples the game used for the different categories. The eight games I am requesting cover many reading skills and strategies. The Nonfiction Plinko CD-ROM focuses on the skills needed to read nonfiction, like reading charts, tables, and diagrams. The Highlight the Clues game has stories from five different genres. The students have to underline where in the passage they find the answer before choosing an answer. The pack of six games include games that focus on inferencing, main idea, reading for details, cause and effect, vocabulary, and drawing conclusions. Since these are games, the students can go against another student or work together in teams. I believe that the students learn a lot from working in groups.

The games will provide my students with an interesting way to practice using their reading skills.

I hope to reach my students by using something they love...technology. These games can be used whole class and during independent workshop time since my students know how to use the board on their own. These games will also lead to discussions over why certain answers are correct and others answers are incorrect. I find that when my students are able to work together, they learn more.
