Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In my quest to enhance my 6th grade class' reading and writing skills, I am currently working on developing unit and lesson plans which can challenge and motivate them to grow as readers and writers. In a dual language setting this goal has many challenges. While some students are proficient in the English language and weaker in the Spanish language, other students experience the reverse. My philosophy, however, is not to water-down the content of my lessons, but to provide resources and support that will aid them in reaching higher and digging deeper into themselves to learn and grow. In order to accomplish this task I need resources that lend themselves to that type of challenge. This means more and more books that have strong characters, plots, themes, and settings, etc. This will enable my students to think critically and develop strong analytical skills, which will transcend the classroom into everyday life. For this year, I want to challenge them in the various literary genres and seek funding for the following books: The Outsiders (37 copies) A Single Shard (37 copies) These resources will be used by both my 6th grade classes, enabling them to participate in literature circles and guided reading sessions that will enhance their reading comprehension abilities. My students are also required to complete two writing pieces for publication a month based on the books they read, and as such, their access to these books will enable them to complete this requirement in quality fashion. Thank you.
