My Students

Can you remember the first time you saw a sign written in a foreign language? You had no idea what the sign was telling you. Over half of my students have this same experience daily when we read our social studies textbook. They do not have the skill to decipher the information in the book.

My students are 6th grade students who attend a public school in a suburb outside of a large metropolitan area.

Most of the students at my school qualify for free or reduced price lunch, and we have a free breakfast program every morning. Our student population is diverse. We have a wide range of cultures represented in the building. I teach 140 6th graders who enter 6th grade one to two grade level below in reading. My sixth graders have taken to the Ancient World like fish take to water. They ask great questions about how the ancient world connects to our world today. They keep learning journals in my class, where they write down questions they'd like to know more about.

My Project

The Ancient Civilization library I've requested will enhance my students understanding of the ancient world. Students in America often believe that the world began in 1776, the beginning of United States. Students of this generation need to know more about the history of the rest of the world. They are apart of a global community that we all need to learn to respect. Respect builds with knowledge. Studying the Ancient Civilizations makes us all see each other as citizens of planet earth. It also helps us see a world much different than our own.

Last year, our school didn't meet AYP.

Our students enter with so many deficits in their learning. These materials will help me, as their teacher, close some of those gaps by providing them with interesting, leveled materials. The more success they have to acquire literacy, the better off they will be in their future academic endeavors.
