Technology in the classroom holds an important place to enhance the learning environment our children spend so much time in everyday. I strive to give my students the richest of learning experiences, which can be a struggle at times. I am a 2nd grade teacher at an inner city charter school in New York. The majority of my students qualify for free or reduced school lunch, come from single family homes, and are at risk emotionally and academically. In addition, I have several special education students who need a lot of time and support from the teacher.

I am always thinking of new and exciting ways to make learning more engaging for my students. They need a lot of visual representations in order for them to remember what they are learning and to hook them into the lesson. This is hard at times because my school does not have color printers and my drawings can only go so far!

One way to enhance these visual representations that so many of them need to learn would be to have a digital camera and printer in the classroom to support student learning. The pictures from this digital camera would be used to make student authored big books with pictures of the students acting out the stories they write. It would also be a great way to display step by step directions of classroom expectations with students performing the tasks. That way students would be able to independently refer to the charts and remember the steps of what they should be doing. The digital camera would be a great way to capture classroom celebrations and field trips that should be remembered by all. These pictures could also be made into individual books authored by students to take home or to be displayed in the classroom.
