My Students

I am a first year teacher in a 5th grade class. The area that I am in is higher poverty and as an intern I don't get full resources towards my classroom. It's not fair for the students' education to be hindered; therefore, I am reaching out for any help that I can obtain to enhance their education.

Do you remember sitting in classes that were boring and just required you to listen and take notes off the chalkboard?

We all have had this experience; however, I want to change that for my students. I have a class full of joyful and energetic fifth graders that deserve more than that. Our school is in an area that is higher poverty. Therefore, school needs to be an enriching and engaging place that they love to come each day. We are in a wonderful school that helps to enhance their learning and ensure they feel loved and welcomed each and every day. However, I want to do more to ensure these students are able to love coming to school and are engaged every day in their learning. Engaged learning enables success, which each of these students deserves.

My Project

Can you help change the way these students are learning curriculum in the classroom? No more copying notes off the board, but instead expressing their understanding through their own words, pictures, and foldables. Interactive notebooks are a full brain experience for students. Implementing interactive notebooks for math, language arts, science, and social studies this year can help them be engaged in every single subject. The students will have the opportunity to express their knowledge and personal understanding in their own way on a daily basis. Interactive notebooks allow the students to use their creativity to document their knowledge. This is a wonderful way that keeps students engaged in their learning and assessment. Not only do they have these as a study guide, but it's also a portfolio of all that they have learned throughout the year. No two students are the same; therefore, no two interactive notebooks will be the same! Students LOVE them and what more could a teacher want?

As aforementioned, I only have half the resources this year for my students.

It's not fair to them to be hindered just because I am an intern. Therefore, anything helps! I have found the specific things that would provide them with the materials they need to be engaged and successful in every content area this year. These students will be able to express their understanding in a creative and personal way, which will improve their confidence in school and love for learning!
