Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up."- Pablo Picasso. Many of my Fifth grade students have not been exposed to enough art experiences to discover their inner artist. Some of them are still learning how to stay inside the picture when coloring.

I teach a Fifth grade ESL self-contained class of 20 students at a Title I School located in Queens, New York.

My school consists of children who come from very low-income families, many of whom speak or are currently learning to speak English as a second language. My job is not only to teach my students Reading, Writing, Math and English as a Second Language, but also to assist them in becoming acclimated to American culture. My students deserve the best quality education, but unfortunately due to budget cuts, we no longer have an art program. In addition, teachers will only get about $70 for classroom supplies. I have always integrated art instruction across the curriculum in order to boost creativity as well as speaking, listening and writing skills. This year, I plan to continue to integrate art across the curriculum.

My Project

In order to integrate the arts across the curriculum, I am requesting water colors, oil pastels, and markers among other supplies. I would like provide my students with the opportunity to use materials that they have never had access to. My vision is for my ELL's to use their creativity to paint, illustrate, and use their English language skills to explain their work. These works of art will also become part of the writing process. Students can use these supplies to create/illustrate beautiful covers for their published pieces of writing.

In addition, these materials will be used by students who do not speak English and want to express themselves with illustrations.

These simple yet important and highly engaging materials will leave an everlasting impression on my students.
