My Project

We are excited to implement a mini novel study of "Monster" by Walter Dean Myers for our 7th grade ELA team at the Title 1 Middle School, Corona Arts and Sciences Academy in Corona, Queens. This powerful novel, which explores themes of identity, justice, and the complexities of the legal system, captivated our students during their initial exposure in the Unit One HMH curriculum. By providing the full text, along with supportive materials such as discussion guides and visual aids, we aim to enhance comprehension and spark a deeper interest in reading. These resources will cater to diverse learning styles, ensuring that all students, particularly those reading below grade level, can access and engage with the material effectively.

Our primary goal for this project is to foster a love for reading and improve literacy skills among our students.

By delving into a compelling narrative that resonates with their experiences, we hope to motivate students to read independently and connect more deeply with literature. Additionally, we aim to cultivate critical thinking through discussions and reflections on the characters’ choices and the societal issues presented in the novel. This project is designed not only to improve reading levels but also to empower students by giving them a voice in the conversations around their lives and communities.

What makes our students special is their resilience and unique perspectives shaped by their diverse backgrounds. Many come from challenging circumstances, yet they demonstrate an incredible capacity for growth and creativity. By engaging with "Monster," we aim to validate their experiences while encouraging them to see themselves as active participants in their own narratives. This project is not just about reading; it’s about building confidence, fostering empathy, and creating a supportive community where students can thrive as learners and individuals.
