Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students range from Pre-K through 5th grade and they all have Individualized Education Programs. The majority of my students live in lower income housing, projects, or shelters in the south Bronx, NY. These students are energetic, charming, and sweet! Many of them need additional assistance in fine motor and visual motor skills, which are some of the underlying effectors of handwriting, and classroom tool manipulation (i.e., scissors, sharpener). In addition, the students also have decreased self-regulation, affecting their ability to attend and engage in tasks for long periods of time.

The donations to this project will help to improve my students' understanding of and engagement in authentic, meaningful activities.

It is my job to help these students to continue growing, developing and overall facilitating their success, particularly during this difficult time. With the help of DonorsChoose, it will be possible to bring these students the support they need now during remote learning and continue providing additional support once the schools reopen to return to the school safely.

My Project

The items I am requesting will take remote learning to another level! Currently I am using a Chromebook for the occupational Teletherapy services I have been delivering to my students since March 2020. However, it has been very difficult to use a single device to show and demonstrate activities. I have to constantly move the device to various areas of my room and/or flip the cover up and down to get a better view of what I am demonstrating (e.g., drawing, writing, yoga poses, how to tie shoelaces, buttoning, etc.).

Therefore, these external devices will provide the best visual and auditory environment for my students.

The headset with microphone has a longer wire compared to the conventional headset I have been using. It will allow me to move more freely when demonstrating activates to my students without having to compromise the sound quality. Currently, I have to unplug them from my laptop and I can't hear my students well if I am not close to the laptop. The ring light will assist in providing more direct light in the working area so students can see me better, particularly when having to move to areas that have poor lighting during gross motor/movement activities. Since the external camera is portable, it will help my students have other view points of activities I am demonstrating to facilitate understanding and learning. The laminator can be used to create activities to supplement writing lessons. It will also continue supporting learning, as I will be able to create individualized activities to my students when I go back to providing in-person occupational therapy.
