Help Mrs. B.

I am a sixth grade teacher of Language Arts and Social Studies. I teach in Slidell, Louisiana. I recently earned a Masters degree in educational technology. I want desperately to put my knowledge to good use for each and every one of my students. However, the computers in my classroom do not allow me this option. I only have two computers that work and they are both at the end of their life cycles. Each one freezes if it is used for more than fifteen minutes. I have two groups of students with approximately 30 students in each group. Our school does not have a very large budget for technology and because of the size of the school, many resources are spread very thin. The school services grades 4-6 and has approximately 1,000 students. To make matters worse, "post-Katrina" life has taken its toll on technology both at the school and at home for the students. I have an interactive class website and many classroom activities that incorporate the use of technology. Therefore, it is crucial that I have at least four reliable classroom computers for thirty students to rotate on and off of throughout the lessons. We do things like power point presentations, research, web-quests and reports among other things. In addition I would also find it greatly beneficial to have a good printer to produce the student work. We currently have no classroom printer. The students will have access to the machines all day; therefore, they will be able to rotate on and off of them to complete assignments such as: power point presentations, research, and general reports. The constant and consistant use of these computers will allow the students to become proficient in all facets of using a computer. They will gain great knowledge and experience from the abundant time afforded them on the computers. The first assignment that we would start on would be Welcome Power Point presentations for Open house. Each student creates a page for their parents and it is compiled into one show. This is displayed at open house for the parents. Another assignment we would work on is a camping web quest that I have created. This assignment requires the student to have access to the computer to get the assignment and then to do subsequent activities that accompany the webquest. They will use Microsoft Word to create an itinerary and Microsoft Excel to show their accomodations and gear. To see this site please feel free to go to my website at: http://pangea.tec.selu.edu/~abolin/etec641/index641.html. Click on the camping trip from the home page. It is my firm belief that students who are exposed to technology in their curriculum are more prepared for the future. Therefore, I truly believe the students in my class would benefit greatly from the access to this equipment. In these trying times for our students many of them are displaced and do not have the access to such equipment. The school setting is often the only exposure that the student will receive.
