Help me give my students tools to regulate their emotions and enhance their social-emotional wellbeing. They need Magna-Tiles, sensory sand, and sensory beads.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our students live in an area of the Bronx that is ridden with poverty. It is heartbreaking to see the effects of such poverty firsthand. Some cannot afford simple things usually taken for granted such as pencils, backpacks, or even winter jackets to keep them warm in the cold weather. Some arrive hungry because they were not able to eat a meal for dinner the night before. Throw the pandemic in the mix and now our students have even more trauma to heal from.
Despite the hand they were dealt, our students are brimming with curiosity and overall excitement for learning.
However, unfortunately, as a result of the trauma, our students often have trouble regulating their emotions. This ends up resulting in negative and toxic behaviors.
If funded we are hoping that these tools will help to set up a calm space in our room where students can cool down and learn healthy alternatives for dealing with their emotions. The Magna-Tiles will help redirect while allowing for a creative outlet, as will the sand, fidgets, and stress toys. Sensory toys are what my students need to succeed!!
