My Project

I am in a mission to build a learner-centered classroom where my English Learners feel valued and empowered. Believing in the capacity of my English Learners and the assets that they bring, I am designing spaces where they feel safe to express their thoughts in groups, embrace mistakes as valuable learning opportunities, and engage in problem-solving using non-permanent surfaces that encourage flexibility and growth that further harness their problem solving and communication skills which are essential life skills.

Join me in inspiring my students to believe in themselves, unlock their full potential, and become great individuals that they are capable of becoming.

THE VERTICAL NON-PERMANENT SURFACES WILL:

1.INCREASE ACCESSIBILITY AND VISIBILITY-My whiteboard is not in a location visible to all students making it difficult for ELs on the left side of my classroom and students with vision issues to see clearly. Using movable whiteboards would help resolve this issue.

2. PROMOTE ACTIVE ENGAGEMENT AND DEEPER LEARNING

-Vertical spaces according to research plays a great role in effective collaboration and productivity and increased student engagement and knowledge retention.

-Research in neuroscience, education, and psychology shows that incorporating movement into learning can yield better outcomes. Vertical surfaces allow movement and make thinking visible.

-Vertical spaces can build oracy that can help strengthen literacy.

GOALS:

1. Promote oracy in the classroom to aid in strengthening literacy.

2. Cultivate higher-order thinking skills that can be utilized within other disciplines and contexts.

3. Develop the English Learners' language domains: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

4. Visible thinking supports language development and enhances critical thinking skills, helping students progress in their language domains, succeed on the WIDA ACCESS test, and demonstrate proficiency on the SBA.
