This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am honored to teach in a middle school in Tennessee that values students and supports teachers to teach. My 5th grade students love to learn and have lots of energy. They are all English Language Learners who are trying to learn the content while mastering the English Language. That can be really tough. Not only are they learning about scientific concepts- they have to do it in another language.

One of the things that I love the most is their "gotcha" moments each day.

Those times when I know that the content and language has made a connection and it is evident in their eyes. I will work as hard as I can to make sure that all of my students learn as much as they can and find success every single day.

My Project

True inquiry has to be mentally and physically engaging. Stimulating the minds of my English Language Learners in my science classroom is a challenge but I know that I can do it if I use models and text as much as possible.

By providing opportunities for students to explore and engage, I am setting up science to be real life for them.

Whether it's at the beginning, the end, or the middle of my unit, my students need to be working with their hands and reading science content on their reading level. The reading materials that I have ordered will allow my students to understand what we are talking about and allow them to write about it in their structured journals.
