This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our English Language Learners are superstars who have traveled to our small community school from all over the world. They represent Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Yemen, Albania, Pakistan, and Mexico. Some of our students live in a temporary family shelter, with extended family, or in public housing. They bring their cultures, languages, and life experiences into my ESL classroom where they learn a new language and a new culture while embracing and maintaining their home cultures.

They have been working incredibly hard to reach fluency in English.

Despite this, they need additional support to allow them to feel confident using academic English in the classroom. Improving their English language skills will help them to prosper in all other academic subject areas and allow them to thrive as young scholars.

My Project

My English Language Learners have spent the past few months building their phonemic awareness and phonic skills. I am so proud of the growth they have made. They have worked so hard. We are now moving to the next step - reading comprehension. Can you imagine the struggle of learning not only how to read in a new language but also understanding the text in this language?

The donations to this project will help to improve my English Language Learners' reading comprehension; this will motivate and encourage them to become life long readers.

These requested learning centers will help my language learners focus on a specific comprehension skill each session ranging from main idea and identifying key details to recognizing the author's point of view. The vocabulary cards included will also allow students to reinforce key words. Students will use various authentic text -- both non-fiction and fiction in a student friendly/accessible manner.

Each day, students will have a designated block of time devoted to practicing reading comprehension skills. Students will be encouraged to think critically about what they are reading. Each day they will deepen their understanding of the text for that week by focusing on a specific sub category of reading comprehension.

I do not believe in a "one size fits all" model to teaching. All my learners are individuals. They have different learning styles which I aim to incorporate in all my activities.
