This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a proud teacher of a 5th grade integrated co teaching English language learner class in Queens, New York. My students come from diverse backgrounds mainly from Ecuador and the Dominican Republic. The English language learners in my class proficiency levels range from entering (newcomers) to commanding (proficient).

My students are eager to learn and I am confident they will succeed given the appropriate supports and materials.

A main focus this year in my class is social and emotional learning and building a community that consists of different identities.

My Project

My goal this year is to move my students’ English proficiency levels as well as building their vocabulary. Read Alouds are done daily focusing on social emotional learning. The students select a variety of books each week to read independently in school and at home. They respond to their reading and set reading and writing goals.

The students participate in class discussions multiple times throughout the day reflecting on "mirrors and windows" showcasing the students identities.

The fulfillment of my request for the materials will help the students succeed because they will have access to a variety of materials on all levels.
