I am a kindergarten teacher at an elementary school in a diversified area of Southern California. My students have a broad range of language abilities and backgrounds. Almost half of my students speak another language at home. For some, kindergarten is their first school experience in the United States.

Teaching to second language learners can be very challenging and rewarding. I hope to give them as many hand-on experiences that I can in the class because for many it is the only English learning experience they have.

My students and I would love to be able to play the songs from Dr. Jean's sing along songs that gets children to move and chant as they learn the alphabet. I will use her songs to implement building skills like learning the days of the week, rhyming words, and numbers each day as part of our regular classroom routine. In addition, the games and sorting boards will challenge students to match uppercase to lowercase letters and other phonemic learning centers would help my students to distinguish beginning sound, ending sound as they match and sort. These items will enhance my students in becoming an independent learners.

My goal is to provide the students with the skills to learn more vocabularies and build phonemic awareness in kindergarten. With your donation our children would enjoy singing in the classroom and participate in an activity which is fun way to learn the language. You will also give them the chance to play games with three other friends and that would also make learning fun and exciting. Regardless of their background or language skills, all of the children in my classroom share a love of learning to read and write. Please make this possible for them.
