My Project

Our English department lounge is an assortment of furniture that has been collected in the room over the years. There are two couches that we got off Craigslist, random desks, mismatched chairs, burnt orange cabinets with blue counter tops, and tables pushed together to create a conference table. It is not a space that feels inviting, calming, or encouraging to be in, yet it is a space that is used in a multitude of ways - by both staff and students.

These materials will allow me to give the English department a much-needed makeover and create a space that is more inviting to both students and staff.

Our English department meets in this space for meetings and collaboration. Our MUN club uses this room when it hosts conferences for schools across the state. Students meet in this space with teachers to discuss letters of recommendation. This space is used for 504/IEP meetings. Students from the special ed department often take breaks in this space. It is a space that should be enjoyed in addition to the practical services it provides.

My coworkers work so hard and I want them to have a space to decompress during their prep periods. I want students who use the space to feel welcome and safe. I want anyone who visits our space to see a well-decorated room that reflects the high quality of their teachers. Our school colors are orange and blue so I've carefully chosen materials that honor school spirit and also provide a sophisticated aesthetic. Teaching has been a challenge ever since the return to campus from the pandemic and our campus really needs the morale boost of a welcoming space. This project is just phase 1 of my hopes for a makeover, but one step at a time.
