My Students

Ever wanted to create your own musical instruments, build a catapult or design your own Rube Goldberg machine? These are just some of the activities that my 9th grade Physical Science class completes over the course of the year.

My students are a wonderful, hardworking group of 9th graders that have rarely had the opportunity to learn about the magic of science and engineering.

As an engineering magnet school, we are teaching these students how to design and build from their imagination, and giving them a sense of confidence and pride in their abilities. May of my students have never used basic tools, and many more have never had the opportunity to create projects from their own ideas. My students love to engineer, and they thrive on building and creating rather than simply reading about these ideas in a book. Since we are an inner city school, we have very limited resources, which really limits the types of projects that we can pursue.

My Project

By having some great tools, my students will be able to take their engineering designs to the next level, and learn basic skills that will stay with them throughout their lifetime. These tools include hammers, glue guns, hand saws, hack saws, power drills, screwdrivers and wrenches. They can create their own musical instruments to demonstrate frequency and wavelength, build catapults to learn about Newton's Laws, and even design and build their own energy efficient model homes as a final project. My students will be able to use these tools to improve their engineering skills, hopeful sparking their interests in engineering careers in the future. Learning how to build with basic tools is a skill that many of my inner city students lack, from using a hand saw or a drill to simply hammering in some nails. I want my students to continue to use and develop their engineering skills for the rest of their lives.

The material donations for this project will really help my students learn how to use tools and create engineering projects that they are truly proud of.

They will carry these skills throughout their lives, and hopefully a number of the will pursue careers in science and engineering as a result of their experiences in my class. Building projects gives them an amazing sense of pride and accomplishment that helps build a foundation for a positive high school experience.
