My Project

Last year, as a part of our social/emotional curriculum, I introduced "open play" engineering STEM materials in my kindergarten classroom. I hoped that my students would verbally share what they were building with their classmates, and after social distancing for so long, begin to engage more with cooperative play. I provided the students with the autonomy to select whichever materials they chose. I expected that my students would come to me and ask for directions or ask for MY ideas about how to design, engineer and create projects with the materials. However, what I saw instead was independence, exploration, cooperation, team building, trial and error, deep conversations about their thinking and their process and lastly, I saw a tremendous amount of pride. My four and five year old students were amazing me with their enthusiasm and tenacity to use building materials in ways I never thought possible. AND to amaze themselves as well.

My goal for this school year is to add to our supply of available STEM building materials.

I want to allow the students multiple entry points and help develop their confidence in design and engineering. I want my students to see their successes and learn from their mistakes with a willingness to try again.

I selected STEM materials that will meet the needs of all my students; especially those who are hesitant to take risks in engineering, as well as those who already have more confidence. My goal is for all of my students to engage in the design and creation of engineering projects.
