Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This is one of my engineering student's favorite projects each year: creating a moving dragon using paper tubes, sticks, and a lot of hot glue. This concept comes from the building of a caterpillar activity which uses the concept of cams (a projection on a rotating part in machinery, designed to make sliding contact with another part while rotating and imparting variable motion to it).

Imagine this, designing a set of cams where you off-center the axle so this rotating axle creates an uneven up and down motion which makes the body of your dragon move.

Then, you make different shapes for the cams and offset them so this movement changes throughout the entire dragon. This is how my students learn about rotational and linear motion, by creating these Lunar New Year Chinese dragons.

Last year I had to borrow corded glue guns, which made it very difficult to do this project since my room has limited outlets. This year, we would like a set of cordless glue guns that use an 18 V rechargeable battery. This style of battery will also be used for our drills and other power tools. This is part 1 of a 3 part Lunar New Year project where will also be requesting additional sticks and paper tubes. We have enough dragons and boxes left over from the project last January.

January 29th Chinese Lunar New Year is celebrated in 2025 and it is going to be the Year of the Snake. Technically, I could have them design snakes for this project in 2025, but I find that using the beautiful Chinese dragons is more eye-catching and meaningful.

Thank you for supporting this project and helping us create our Chinese New Year Dragons.
