Engineering Challenges and Coding: Help Curious STEM Students Explore Robotics

My students need age appropriate robots to spark their love of coding and problem solving. Both the Sphero Sprk+ and the Cue robots are designed for the early middle grades.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are eager to learn and willing to work. They come from all across the District of Columbia to attend our public charter school. To attend, students simply have to apply and win a lottery system; there is no achievement requirement. With students from every ward of the district, we have a huge range of diversity within our classrooms, including many ELL (English Language Learners) and special education students. The students are enthusiastic and ready to learn. They truly enjoy hands-on science experiences, often naming them as the "high" of the day in afternoon advisory. I hope to provide them with even more authentic experiences within the classroom.

I recently started a STEM club with the 5th through 8th grade students at my school and the outpouring of excited young scientists and engineers was amazing.

We gather each week to build, code, compete, and simply play with ideas. I hope to continue to inspire my students to love and pursue STEM as they continue their education.

My Project

As our STEM club grows, we are looking to add more stations and activities to keep students engaged and challenged. This can be challenging for a club without a budget. We borrowed Sphero robots from a nearby high school and the students were in love! The students designed obstacle courses for one another, created games to play together, and quickly jumped into programming and coding without fear. Week after week they would ask when we could borrow the robots again.

I hope to recreate this authentic programming experience with my students on a regular basis.

I am asking for two Cue robots and a Sphero robots as well as a charging station to ensure the robots are always charged and ready for students to use. Having several robots that are available during STEM club after school and other free choice times during the school day will allow a larger number of our middle school students to experience the fun of driving and programming a robot. Since both robots are very easy to start using, they provide an easy entry into robotics. Both robots also allow for easy programming with blocks that can scale up to typing in code. This will also allow students to truly dig deeper with programming and coding each week as they seek out new challenges. The robots would also be used by classroom teachers as we push to integrate more STEM activities into our classrooms. Science and Math classes can use the sensors to create graphs of velocity and acceleration over time. Art classes can use markers or paint with the robots to create unique designs. Clearly our STEM program would be greatly enhanced by having access to robots.
