My Students

My students are ready and eager to learn. We are a Title I school with 100% free and reduced lunch. Our students come from a rural community with parents who want them to succeed and the best for them in life. My students are in first grade.

We enjoy learning in a nontraditional environment and using technology to explore the world around us.

My students are excited and love the opportunity to explore the world around them. They have been learning to work collaboratively and how to find solutions to real-world problems.

My Project

This project is to provide my students with supplies to complete a STEM project at home. Each week we read a story. The story is read every day and we examine vocab., reading, and grammar. This project would allow us to add STEM projects to complete at home.

Our engineers of the week (3 students) will each take home a weekly challenge bag.

The challenge will be based on the story we are reading. On Friday, the engineers will bring their designs and explain their design. We will test each design and check the qualities that made it a good design.

My students are excited when we complete STEM challenges in class, but we are limited by the constraint of time. We have spent time working on the engineering process. My students have learned what it means to be an engineer. First we pose a problem, then discuss the constraints of our solution, plan a design, create the design, and then test the design. Real engineers do not have unlimited resources so my students understand that they have material constraints in their designs.

This project was inspired by the Super Scientists project and Science Everywhere. That project had students complete experiments at home and explore Science outside of school.

This project will fund materials for 3 challenges (12 bags total).

Spiderling Parachutes - tissue paper, pipe cleaners, and construction paper to create a parachute for a baby spider to travel to a new home.

New Shoes for Pete - construction paper, string, and pipe cleaners to create a pair of shoes for Pete that will keep his feet dry.

Wonder Launcher - craft sticks, rubber bands, pipe cleaners, and construction paper to create a launcher to send Auggie to space.

Materials will be kept in plastic envelopes and sent home.
