My Students

My students are ready and eager to learn. We are a Title I school with 100% free and reduced price lunch. Our students come from a rural community with parents who want them to succeed and the best for them in life. My students are in first grade.

We enjoy learning in a nontraditional environment and using technology to explore the world around us.

My students are excited and love the opportunity to explore the world around them. They have been learning to work collaboratively and how to find solutions to real-world problems.

My Project

This project is to provide my students with supplies to complete a STEM project at home. Each week we read the same story everyday and examine vocabulary, sentence structure, and reading strategies. Our engineers of the week (3 students) will each take home a weekly challenge bag. The challenge will be based on the story we are reading. On Friday, the engineers will bring their designs and explain their design. We will test each design and check the qualities that made it a good design as well as areas of improvement.

My students are excited when we complete STEM challenges in class, but we are limited by the constraint of time.

We have spent time working on the engineering process and working through each step. My students have learned what it means to be an engineer. First we pose a problem, then discuss the constraints of our solution, plan a design, create the design, and test the design.

This project was inspired by the Super Scientists project and Science Everywhere. That project had students complete experiments at home and explore Science outside of school. This project will allow my students to create and explore problems in new ways. Each book will be a challenge for students and the materials will be used to complete the challenge.

The challenges are as follows:

Snowmen at Night - Create the tallest snowman (paper, masking tape)

Goldilocks and Just One Bear - Create a new bed for Goldilocks (craft sticks, masking tape, paper)

What to Do with a Box - Create a box with materials supplied (paper, masking tape)

If I Ran the Zoo - Build a cage for a new animal and create the animal (paper, craft sticks, straws, tape)

Music, Music Everywhere - Create a new instrument (straws, tape, cups, string)
