Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. There are around 675 students from pre-kindergarten to fifth grade. Almost 45% are English Language Learners, around 21% have IEPs (Individual Education Plans.) 92% of our students are Latino. Almost half of our students are in dual language classrooms. In this program all subjects are taught in both English and Spanish. Some of our students also require physical modifications to make their educational experience accessible and successful.

Students come from many different countries, such as Mexico, Ecuador, Honduras, Dominican Republic, China and Yemen.

Our kids love working on projects that incorporate opportunities for communicating and expressing their thoughts and ideas. They love to speak and collaborate with each other! Despite the many challenges they face, students display an awesome resilience and tenacity when tackling problems in school. Students often demonstrate a hearty social and emotional intelligence in their warm and caring interactions with each other.

My Project

Students will build unique and challenging geometric structures such as bridges and monuments with KEVA planks. These materials help students gain an understanding of balance, proportion, design and an appreciation of architecture. Through collaborative construction with LEGO bricks students will develop speaking and active listening skills. While building a variety of structures students will ask questions and explore transdisciplinary connections in science, technology, engineering, art and math. These concrete materials will develop an understanding of organizing parts to a whole in a three dimensional structure.

Students will have the opportunity to creatively use LEGO and KEVA forms to make, create and invent multiple complex structures in collaboration with each other.

Engaging with these forms, students learn to construct stable three dimensional structures. Through the placement of components students demonstrate ability to show movement, gesture and expression. The collaborative constructive process will motivate negotiation of design problems and foster creative solutions to problems such as balance and integrity of models and structures. Students will learn to think like engineers by integrating design, building, math and science skills.
