Engaging Young Minds in Math and Science

My students need supplies such as yard sticks, graph papers, and scotch tape that will allow them to engage in meaningful Math and Science activities. They will be using these materials to create presentations and diagrams, 3D models, and design and conduct scientific experiments.

My Students

My students are an amazing group of 6th graders in a Title I school where more than 80% of the student population qualifies for free or reduced-price lunches. My Math and Science classes contain students from so many different backgrounds, including English learners, Magnet students, and students with specific learning disabilities, yet they all come to class hoping to learn and grow as much as they can.

I want to give my students as many opportunities to engage in meaningful, hands-on learning to spark their interests in Math and Science.

I believe that when students are having fun learning, that they will remember what they learn!

My Project

These materials will help students bring what they are learning in Math and Science into hands-on opportunities. Using the yard sticks, graph papers, and scotch tape, students will be able to create 3D models that help them learn about volume, area, ratios, and proportional relationships. Timers, stopwatches, clipboards, and chart papers will help students as they conduct scientific experiments.

With every activity I have planned for my students, there are often many materials that are not easily accessible at school or by the students.

Having these materials will help tremendously in allowing me to implement fun, yet rigorous activities that revolve around our Common Core Math curriculum and NGSS Science standards.
