My Students

11th and 12th graders choose to take my Holocaust Literature class because they're students of humanity; they are fascinated by what makes people choose love over hate, righteousness over indifference.

My 11th and 12th grade ELA students are brilliant, funny, enthusiastic, and kind. They are diverse; the demographics of the high school is 23% Hispanic, 29% Asian (Approximately 85% of the Asian population in Cambodian), 6% African and African American, and 41% White.

15% of all students are special needs, 65% are on free or reduced lunch, and 30% are English language learners (2008.) Many of these students struggle with great adversities, yet their perseverance never fails to impress me.

My Project

My students will read the books like The Berlin Boxing Club and Maus II: A Survivor's Tale and examine "choices" and "identity" as major themes. They will participate in various activities with the books, such as small and large group discussions, silent conversations, presentations, Socratic seminars, analytical and creative writing assignments, and writing/directing/filming screenplays about their own choices and identities. While reading these books, students will examine "choices" and "identity" as a main theme.

Many of my students face tremendous adversity, and struggle with their own identities.

The books I've chosen are high interest, and by reading about the struggles of others, my students will learn to cope with their own. Many of the books we currently use are either too simple or too complex; these books strike a remarkable balance of substance and accessibility.
