My Project

As a school psychologist, part of my job includes the delivery of social emotional learning to small groups, as well as group and individual counseling. Most of the students I work with have a high number of ACE's and struggle with emotional and/or learning disabilities. Prior to COVID, these children were behind social-emotionally. For many, the pandemic only furthered that gap.

My goal for this project is to incorporate more of my student's suggestions into my future counseling sessions/lesson plans.

My students have provided me with feedback that they found my lessons with art, technology, play and/or games more engaging. I will use the tablets in sessions to differentiate responses and allow opportunities for students to respond silently/privately. The books will be used to diversify and expand my counseling lessons. There are games, toys and fidgets which facilitate communication in sessions, posters which reinforce concepts, and magnets for our "Zones" check-in chart. Even Legos are used in friendship groups: following directions, sharing, making decisions, compromise, taking turns, etc.

Teaching social emotional skills is even more important than ever before. Students are coming to school socially delayed after being confined during the pandemic and it is impacting their ability to grow academically and socially. The more engaged they are with their time with me, the quicker they will pick up the needed skills.
