Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As the beginning of the school year approaches, I am extremely excited to start school once again. This year will be my second year teaching and I have the honor of teaching a 1st and 2nd grade combination class. Although this is new to me, I am ready to take on the challenge!

In order to support students in both grade levels, I want to incorporate fun and engaging manipulatives that can be used for various math activities.

Students will be using these counters to solve CGI math problems and they will also use them for their Counting Collections. These counters caught my attention because they can be used in various ways. Students can use their imagination and count these objects by separating them by colors, sizes, etc. If students are counting with the bears, they can count the feet, arms, ears etc. These manipulatives help students expand their imagination and create math problems on their own. Last year, I had the opportunity to see a teacher from a different school use these manipulatives and I loved seeing how she challenged them to create different math problems with the tools that they had.

Therefore, this year I want to challenge my students in the same way. I want to help expand their thinking and challenge them in fun ways that can make math a memorable school experience. I do not want resources to be a limitation for my students. I would greatly appreciate the support!
