My Students

Do you remember reading magazines as a kid, flipping through the pictures, reading the articles and realizing there is a much bigger world out there?

My students are in grades 8-12 and live in a rural logging community.

The school was built in 1926 and remains the heart of the community. We are a small town without a movie theater, grocery store, fast food chain, or many of the other cultural institutions that people take for granted. My students are very curious about the world outside but other than the Internet at school, many lack access to the broader world.

My Project

Every week our modern world history class discusses current events. Other classes have structured time during the week for reading. These magazines will provide text, pictures, stories, analysis, and more about the world outside of our small town. These magazines will give students examples of people pursuing their passions in music, art, science, and math and serve as an access point to discover the discussions going on outside of their community. These magazines will showcase journalists who can write and research, allowing students a model for how the skills they are learning in school can be used in the world.

I want my students to find their voice and use it to advocate for the issues they believe in and are passionate about.

Information is a key component in this process and will serve as a lifelong resource.
