My Students

My classroom focuses on exposing my students to a wide variety of texts and authors. We practice literary analysis and discussion regularly. The biggest challenge is acquiring enough copies of the same novels/texts to distribute to several students at the same time.

My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds.

They range the spectrum from students who are dealing with homelessness to students who are coming from affluent households. They are sometimes a bit sheltered and need exposure to current topics and issues. I have a wonderful population of students who want to succeed but do not necessarily understand what it means to struggle or to persevere when things get difficult. I would like to expose them to stories about those who have been successful in difficult situations in their lives. The school I serve in is large; we have some of the largest classes in recent years currently within our classes.

My Project

My students need new and engaging non-fiction texts in the classroom such as biographies of influential people such as Steve Jobs and Malala Yousafzai. I am working towards creating a classroom set of various novels and informational texts that I can distribute to several small groups of students. Each trimester the students select their novel or informational text from a collection that centers around a common idea or enduring understanding. While the students read these texts they will plan out discussion schedules, answer and create questions to bring to discussion, and write essays that analyze the central ideas or themes of the texts they have selected. As the trimester progresses they will be introduced to new literary terminology and concepts that they will practice while reading their selected text. They will also reflect upon their own lives by comparing it to the subject of their selected text. This will provide each student with an immersive experience centered around the text of their choice.

I have already seen a large impact on student learning and engagement as a result of this process during a pilot trimester.

My students were incredibly engaged and excited to read. This could only be accomplished by providing choice and a wide range of texts to my students. We have numerous conversations about bigger issues and themes found within these texts. While it was successful during my pilot trimester, I do not have nearly enough texts to create this experience year long.
