My Students

Do you remember how it feels to be doing math worksheets and memorizing math flashcards? It was no fun! My students are learning new objectives in math. It is hard for them to find a love for learning when the materials they have are outdated. They need materials they enjoy and connect with.

I teach in a rural community at a Title One school.

It is a Title One school because of the number of students we have who are on free or reduced lunch. I have a class with 23 second grade students between the ages of 7 and 8. The class is filled with various learning needs. This age is so crucial in building the foundation of learning critical skills. We are in dire need of extra support and supplies to help them learn! We have a large school with over 730 students grades K-5. Unfortunately the budget was cut so much in education, we aren't able to get the supplies we need to make learning as successful as we would like. I have several ESL children, who have English as a Second Language, as well as those who have been identified as needing intensive academic support. They need support that we just don't have the financial means to fill. Math games have been beneficial to their learning. Unfortunately, we just don't have enough to foster the type of learning that they need.

My Project

Now that the new common core has been implemented, teachers are being asked to teach in many ways that require funding for learning materials. We just can't afford to buy the materials. Having this project fulfilled would help all my students, no matter what academic level they are. We need three board games and a math learning game set. These games are all common core aligned and are amazing learning tools. The are designed to help students on all academic levels learn why enjoying math. They would challenge my students who are above grade level and need challenging. They would also help my other learners who need that extra support. My students love using the paper games I created, however, they don't seem to last long. They become worn and tear, even though they are laminated. Having these math games in my room would provide an amazing learning opportunity for them through engaging means. They will also give my students the opportunity to practice social skills; such as collaborating as a team, having to play fair, and following rules.

This project will make a substantial difference in the learning lives of my students!

These math games will not only help to increase their academic abilities, but their love for learning as well. They will provide my students with the opportunity to expand their skills not only in math, but socially as well.
