Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teaching students with disabilities means I must utilize my creativity, which is what initially brought me to this platform. My students encourage me on a daily basis in ways they may not be aware of. As a result, I constantly seek opportunities and resources to give my students a quality and engaging educational experience.

My students are witty, clever, and have unique personalities and learning styles, with their needs differing greatly.

They are the epitome of resilience, persevering despite the many difficulties and traumas endured —such as losing classmates to gun violence.

My Project

My students have continued to thoroughly enjoy the books in our classroom library from past projects supporters like you have helped us acquire. Recently, my students have continued to ask for more "fun" and "exciting" titles —specifically comics and graphic novels. In addition to the books, new shelves are also needed to house them. Book covers are also needed to protect them so students in years to come are able to enjoy our class library. Clear sticker sheets are also requested to create QR codes to place inside of each book cover. Students can scan the codes to read reviews left by their peers to gauge if it's a title they'd enjoy.

Having diverse titles, such as comics & graphic novels, is especially helpful for students with disabilities —as those with reading deficits have been more reluctant to participate in our silent sustained reading time during class.

This is an imperative activity not only for student success during the year, but to build the stamina for an essential skill they will need far beyond high school graduation.

Many students have hand-selected the books and genres requested. I know for sure that these additions will make them joyful and realize they are heard when they are asked to make suggestions for additions to enhance our classroom experiences. I strive to make my classroom environment more equitable. Having books in our class library reflective of students' gender identities, cultural and religious backgrounds, and other interests is one way to encourage students to enjoy reading for leisure. We thank you in advance for considering supporting our project during what remains to be perilous times for many due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
