My students need books where they see children of color as protagonists. This motivates them to read at home. They also need readers/writers notebooks, and ink for the class printer to publish work.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students are an eclectic bunch--with a range of abilities, who may be classified as low-income, but are never poor in potential and drive. They seek knowledge and feel empowered with the few resources we have. We do not have a department budget or the option to turn in a list of supplies every year. In fact, teachers at my school are driven to provide as many resources as they can because our students are truly remarkable.
Some may not come from socially and emotionally safe homes.
Some may not have their basic needs met at home. Some have trauma and emotional disturbances that affect their learning. Some may be reading at college level.
They need quality literature that allows them to feel seen. Learning and growth happen when I win their hearts--only then can I motivate minds. The books I have carefully chosen have protagonists who are young people of color. They may possibly relate to similar experiences, questions, and struggles.
My students also need to have notebooks to record their ideas, process, and revisions; in addition, we need ink to publish their finished narratives once they are completed.
My Project
Students lose interest when the material is out of date, tattered, and not engaging their imaginations. This quarter I want them to have access to powerful narratives by people of color, so they can write their own, based on an interview they will conduct.
Some of the books I have requested include a New York Times Best Seller titled The Hate U Give.
This is a popular contemporary young adult novel that deals with current societal issues my students may face. I have also included a class set of 100 Words Every Middle Schooler Should Know. I know my students will find joy in learning new words to integrate into their writing, but will also appreciate the etymological explanations the book provides. It's a great resource for middle schoolers that prepares them to be better writers and to comprehend and improve on standardized testing questions.
The composition notebooks are for students who cannot afford to provide their own. They will use them to create, edit, and share their writing this year. Lastly, we need the printer ink which will help publish their final writing projects and even their personal blog entries; we will post them in our hallway displays. Students really appreciate when they see their work exhibited.
With all the literature and notebooks, I know they will be empowered to write their own narratives once they realize there are many professional writers of color who they may not have been exposed to in the past. I guarantee they will do a fantastic job because they will have new tools to work with.
