My Students

Do you remember your first job? Do you remember the pride you felt when you made money for a hard day's work? Please help my elementary entrepreneurs create their item, market it, and sell it to their school peers!

My students are 6 and 7 year-olds who love to learn!

They're all military children whose parents are serving our country on active duty, some who are wounded or deployed. My classroom encompasses children of all branches of service. They love to learn in hands-on and innovative ways. First grade is a critical level as they're mastering the foundation of primary level skills, learning to read, and strengthening their knowledge on the world around them. They strive to reach their personal bests and experiences bring the content to life.

My Project

I want as many students as possible to be exposed to entrepreneurship. My students then have the potential to become entrepreneurs as they begin to have a foundational understanding of it. I will assist my students with devising a business plan, discussing supply and demand, advertising and marketing, pricing, quality control, and other traits of a successful business. Students will learn to work as a team, as well as, apply for managerial roles. They will be paid in Market Day cash for their time worked in order to buy other students' products during this school event. This hands-on activity also incorporates financial literacy as students can elect to save or spend their earned money. The product we will make are decorative colored pens which are a huge hit with students. At this level, they traditionally only write with pencil. The vibrant colors of the ink and the visual appeal of the pens draw in buyers. It is a simple activity for my first graders to make, too.

Why is my project so important?

Because my kids are important. I literally and figuratively have the best class ever. They are inquisitive, hard working, motivated, and most importantly, excited about learning. They give me 120% all year long. I want to provide this hands-on opportunity as both a reward and a learning adventure. I know the memories and experience of their first "job" make these abstract concepts real.
