My 2nd grade ICT classroom is anything but dull!

Our classroom community consists students with diverse needs and personalities. The students are sweet and fun loving and need to be given the opportunity to experience how engaging the classroom can really be! The majority of my students come from low income, non-English speaking families. Several of these students also have special needs. The families often lack the resources to buy basic necessities, let alone new games and activities for the children. With the lack of funding within the school and community, my students have been unable to experience the wonders of engaging in these supplemental materials. Especially with the pressure placed on students with new standards and high stakes testing, these children need an extra boost to become motivated and engaged in their learning processes.

My Project

The materials requested include math puzzles, reading and phonics activities and board games of various levels. Most of my students are English language learners and need more support with Language Arts. The phonics and reading games will help students become stronger readers through reinforcement of phonics and reading skills. The math puzzles will also support specific skills such as algebraic concepts, time, measurement and geometry. Using these activities will allow me to provide small group, skill based intervention. In addition, I believe the modern classroom should teach more than just academics. These games, while reinforcing academic concepts, also provide an opportunity for students to practice appropriate social and behavioral skills. These games promote valuable skills such as turn taking, following directions, displaying sportsmanship and compromising, while making the classroom a fun and interactive environment.

The classroom should be an innately fun place where all students and teachers can display their excitement for learning.

Donations to this project will benefit the classroom by helping create this engaging community of motivated learners. With these games, students develop and form positive memories and relationships with their peers! They receive both academic and social support as they apply what they have learned in a different context.
