My Project

The items I am requesting gives students the opportunity to not only read rich texts in the classroom, but also give them the ability to read outside of the classroom. It is important that we have enough books for students to take home with them because this encourages their reading beyond the classroom walls. We have carefully selected a list of texts that we believe will interest and engage students. Our primary goal, above all else, is to foster a love of reading for students as they end one journey in high school and begin another once they graduate.

The goal for this project is to provide choice in reading material to students and also have students work collaboratively in literature circles to experience the benefit of reading in community with others.

Seeing each other as part of a community creates empathy and connection among students who sometimes may feel disconnected from those around them.

The students at Smyrna High School are special because they have a variety of interests, while being a part of a close-knit, rural community. Our students come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and have a lot of viewpoints and energy that we want to capitalize on as we try to ensure that they are college, career, and community ready.

Ms. McClain will only receive her materials if this project is fully funded by November 7.
