Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It is always a struggle to get hesitant readers reading. Keeping a fresh classroom library is important for morale and elevating reader interest. Each year my students commit to reading at least 30 books and moving up two reading levels and each year my students meet their goals.

We are a Title One school that has 30% Special Education students and 30% English Language Learners.

We have continued to make gains in ELA and Math over the past three years. Our students select our school because we are a magnet school for environmental engineering. We spend a lot of money on technology to support the magnet theme, unfortunately, that often means our classroom libraries aren't as stocked as they need to be. Our students love to read though and are always asking us to get more books. These books were selected based on student surveys of titles they would like to read. If you donate, please know that every penny you spend will go directly to my classroom in which 90 students will use these books to fall in love with literature and strengthen their critical thinking and reading skills.

My Project

So we alternate between whole class novels and independent reading units. These books will go to support the independent reading units where students select a novel, read it and develop a creative writing project as an extension from it. They also use the independent reading novels to reinforce the reading strategies that we teach with the whole novels. If your curious to know how my classroom functions, feel free to read a synopsis of the "Whole Novels for the Whole Class" approach, which is a book written by an excellent teacher named Ariel Sacks. The rug will be used for our "meeting area" where students will engage in deep discussions around common themes that arise in their readings (both whole class novels and independent novels). All 90 of my students will read at least 5 of these books each and hopefully some will read even more! My former students will also be permitted to check out some novels to continue with building their reading skills.

I think it's important to cultivate reading, especially amongst the impoverished population that I teach.

Interesting and engaging books are vital to the work that I do and I have seen year after year, how important it is to have an updated library. Many of my students come to me having never completed an entire book before. All of my students leave not only having read at least four books with the whole class, but numerous books independently. My passion is to turn non-readers into readers.
