My Students

I believe that students learn by making connections and having access to literature. I use picture books for Interactive Read Alouds in many of my lessons to help teach the standards, grab their attention, give them an active role in learning, and help them make those connections to their lives.

I teach second grade in Nashville, Tennessee.

This is my third year in second grade. My school is a Title I, urban public school. Most of my students come from poverty or homes that are just making "ends" meet. This year I have a group of very sweet, energetic second graders. My parents are very supportive and are doing what they can to help their children be successful in school. I want my students to have access to text and literature as much as they can. This is one of the many reasons I try try to incorporate it into my lessons whenever I can.

My Project

I will use these books as teaching tools in my classroom. These books cover a wide range of areas that I feel using picture books and Interactive Read Alouds will support both the curriculum as well as social skills. My students love being read to and enjoy discussing the texts as we read. Interactive Read Alouds are designed for the students to play an active role in their learning. The use of these books will not only support the skills and standards they address, but also further promote reading comprehension. The Read Alouds provide a platform for teachers to discuss the text, skill, and story with their students as you are reading. I will not simply be reading these books, rather we will deeply discuss the text and what it is talking about as I read each story. This helps students to understand "how" and "why". These books would address the standards I have not been able to purchase books for yet.

The books help students see a visual example of the standards that are different and often real-life that allow them to make connections.

Throughout the year, both the students and I often refer back to the books we have read as they have made those connections and it helps with their understanding. They love to read the books again on their own as well for review. These books help teach and reinforce skills in ways that videos, worksheets, and textbooks cannot!
